Dr. Mark T. Swihart, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University at Buffalo, SUNY, has been awarded the 2013 Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal, the highest award given by the Western New York Section for accomplishment and service. Details on the awardee's career can be found here.
The Western New York Section was awarded a 2012 ChemLuminary Award by the ACS National Committee on Community Activities. The award, entitled "Outstanding NCW Event for a Specific Audience" resulted from a 2011 National Chemistry Week demonstration at St. Mary's School for the Deaf in Buffalo.
WNYACS and Honeywell International participants instructed 11th and 12th grade science students on the use of some basic chemistry demonstrations. The school was kind enough to provide an interpreter, and after much practice, the students presented the demonstration to middle school students. It was a major hit!
During the summer, two St. Mary's students presented their demos to visiting students from China. Their presentation closed a circle of outreach extending from WNYACS local section members to hearing impaired students to hearing students from another country. The ChemLuminary award will be displayed at St. Mary's School for the Deaf as inspiration to future students.
